UPDATE: It looks like this deal might have sold out already, which is semi strange since reports show people only getting Restaurant.com and Walmart gift cards. I’ll keep an eye on it to see if it comes back though.
EverSave is another deal-a-day site where I frequently get there emails, but hardly make any purchases. Typically nothing great stands out to me, but today I received an EverSave email where if you spend $12 you will get a “Gift Card Grab Bag” with mystery gift cards equaling at least $45 or more in value. For fun, I decided to take my chances and see what gift cards I’d receive. The site says that potential gift cards could include: Restaurant.com, 1800Flowers.com, Staples, CVS, Cabela’s, Barnes & Noble and Walmart.
So $12 later, I received a $20 Walmart e-gift card and a $50 Restaurant.com gift card. I value the $50 Restaurant.com gift card really at $12, since those certificates typically sell for $20 and then you can typically always find a 60% off coupon (although they are harder to come by and I believe the good old days of 80% and 70% are long gone). I always use restaurant.com certificates, so with just this certificate my $12 buy in ended up as an even exchange. However, I also got a $20 Walmart gift card, so in my mind I am up $20 in free stuff at Walmart. I do not typically purchase online items at Walmart, but I am sure I will find a good use for it (the gift card is only for online purchases, not in store).
This “deal” might be the last thing of interest to some of you, but for those that want to take a gamble and maybe get some free gift cards, this could be fun. At first I assumed I’d just sell the gift card online at cardpool.com or one of those other “Sell a gift card back sites”, but many have a $25 minimum or it needs to be a plastic gift card (not an e-gift card) – so my re-selling the Walmart gift card did not work. However, a reader reminded me that you can purchase another merchants gift card with the e-gift card, so if you would prefer another $20 gift card instead, go ahead and swap it out. For $20 you can get Dominos or Steak n Shake. But for $5 more there are a slew of $25 gift cards, so if you were going to use that merchant anyways, might be worthwhile to pay the extra $5. Or, you can always use your e-gift card to purchase a physical plastic gift card to arrive in the mail. This will then allow you to use it in store.
Crap that Walmart sells cheaper2009-02-24 09:41:09 by ophelon
Don't get me wrong, I used to love RS as a kid, but I went in to get parts to fix a rectifier last year they didn't have any parts. Lots of cell phones, dish tv, and cheap theater in a box stuff. I've never been in an Apple store, but it just felt like RS was trying to be the poor man's version.
